How old does a game need to be considered retro?IMO, 'retro' defines a game that is no longer marketable to the current audience, either because it is a good generation behind in graphics or the gameplay is considered too simple... if Capcom decided to reintroduce Street Fighter 2 (the original... none of this Turbo Tournament 3D Alpha Fighter Monkey Jockstrap Omega stuff...) then it would largely be met with a disinterested shrug from most companies main demographic (i.e. teenagers) However, older gamers will still see it as the most balanced and innovative fighter of 'the better years'... no 3D arenas, no multiple fighting styles, no tag team dynamics or super-Uber-mega-slapdown moves... just hundred-hand slaps, sonic booms and Chun-Li heaving her tits around... also take R-Type, IREM's best game EVER... in its day, really innovative... Great music, varied environments, simple yet effective gameplay with strategy (the right 'FORCE' for the job, along with the ability to powerblast the bad guys (but you were left open to attack whilst charging up))... These days people want mass parallax scrolling invironments, 3D models, mutiple routes thro levels and a soundtrack penned in high-quality CD-Audio by Chris Huelsbeck or some similar artist... R-Type III, Leo and Delta made some inroads into the presentation (Delta was in 3D) and strategy (3 had 3 Force options, Leo did away with it all-together), but whilst they retained the same gameplay, it was stale when compared to the measured brilliance of the Bydo Battleship level of the original game... Sure, im just covering arcade-centric games, but the same applies to all markets... games merely 4-5 years old are considered retro because they date back to a simpler time, before Half-Life revolutionised how developers design games... FreeSpace, arguably the best pure space-sim EVER, is considered retro because, despite having more controls than ur average Harrier (i.e. Start & Stop... 'God bless the idiot proof airforce') it isn't as developed or complex as I-War 2's physics or FreeLancer's plot and economics... SiN is considered Retro next to Half-Life, despite both being released parallel (BAD mistake) and having real world features which eliminated the basic 'key hunt'...
