Sports Memorabilia p1Merchandise for any sport equals big business. As well as sports teams providing their own lines of official merchandise, sales of sports memorabilia, official, unofficial or otherwise is a massive revenue generator for companies. From replica jerseys or shirts, to calendars of your favourite team or sports star, sales of sports fan apparel and souvenirs are increasing year on year in all major sports. For years, sports fan collecting cards have been popular, appealing to all ages. From the playground to the office, you’re never far away from a collector, and while the different lines in these products have grown over time, there’s still plenty of interest (and room in what is an extremely competitive market) for the more traditional lines of merchandise and sports memorabilia. While outlets such as eBay have created a market for the sale of sports autographs reprints, there’s no question that purchasing a reprint doesn’t come close to the thrill of getting an autograph signed in person from your favourite sportsperson. While the eBay market for reprints is big, there is an even bigger market for the originals. That said, the majority of those who are lucky to have sports signed original autographs in their possession do so for reasons other than monetary gain I’m sure. While up to date (and in some cases more fashionable) lines of sports related merchandise and memorabilia are often sought out by collectors and enthusiasts, the demand for vintage sports memorabilia remains as high as ever. With online shopping now commonplace in society, and with outlets such as eBay making it easier to find a piece of memorabilia from yesteryear, that demand shows no sign of decreasing. That is also the case for rare sports collectible memorabilia, with the Internet overtaking the more traditional mail order methods, making it much easier to obtain any specific item that you’re hunting high and low for. |
